How to Soothe a Burnt Tongue

Steps

1. Very first thing to do is apply something cool to your tongue for no less than one full minute. This will help the heat to dissipate more rapidly preventing any further damage to your tongue cells. Some basic things you can use for this are:
   • Ice Cubes
   • Popsicles
   • Ice Cream
   • Yogurt (which many consider to be the medically best thing for a burnt tongue
   • And perhaps most entertaining a cool glass of water to stick your tongue in
   
   
2. A burnt tongue can be pretty uncomfortable, so the next thing you should do is numb the pain. You can do this with any ORAL anesthetic ointment. Be careful not to apply burn creams to an oral burn, they are usually meant for use on the skin, and ingesting them can make you sick. Look for products that contain benzocaine, which is usually sold to treat mouth ulcers, such as oral toothache gels. Anesthetic mouthwash can also help numb the pain. You can also use cough drop that contain benzocaine and/or menthol.


3. Until your molten tongue heals up, here are some general foods you should avoid, since they will irritate the area.
   • Citric fruits and juices
   • Acidic foods, like tomatoes
   • Items with vinegar, pop, etc
   • Salty items, such as potato chips

Tips

• Try not to numb your tongue prior to eating, which could cause you to bite it.
• If your tongue is not burning because of something you ate or drank, then you should see a doctor, this could be a sign of burning mouth syndrome, which has a many diffrent causes.

Warnings

• Don't use too much ointment, if numb your throat to much you can actually inhale your own saliva.
• If the injury severe, don't attempt to deal with it on your own, seek medical attention.
